Crash Course

Tiered weight-based shipping

In this course, we are using U.S. dollars $ and kilograms kg, as these are widely understood and region-neutral options. However, you’re not restricted to these choices — feel free to select whatever currency and weight unit work best for your store in the WooCommerce settings.

The video below demonstrates how to set up a tiered weight-based rate with a fallback for overweight orders:

  • $2.50 for orders up to 3 kg
  • $3.75 for orders from 3 to 5 kg
  • $0.50 every additional kilogram over 5 kg

The last rule also serves as a fallback for overweight orders. If this rule is removed, such orders cannot be placed, as WooCommerce requires a shipping option to be selected for an order to procced. However, it might be the desired outcome in some cases.

The Weight Rate charges for every 1-kg weight step by default. However, it's not limited to this. You can specify any weight step, such as 0.5 kg or 20 kg. Setting the weight step to zero will make it "smooth", calculating the rate as a direct multiplication by the weight.
